AgResearch | Christchurch

A workplace designed to nurture innovation.

Location: Christchurch | Size: 7,500m²

AgResearch, one of New Zealand’s leading research organisations, recently moved into their new headquarters located in Lincoln, just outside Christchurch.

Adjacent to Lincoln University, the facility seeks to showcase AgResearch’s leading science abilities and promote innovation through enhanced collaboration with research and industry partners across the Lincoln district and wider Canterbury region. This project spans 7,500 square meters, with connected workplace and laboratory wings, that can accommodate around 290 people.

The new workspace demonstrates AgResearch’s commitment to advancing the country’s agricultural sector and making it more sustainable, and thus, environmental credentials and supply chain transparency were key when deciding with whom to partner. Aligning with their commitment to reduce environmental impact, Aspect provided products that not only limited downstream waste but also embraced natural materials. Notably, our Drift Booth seating units were made from 100% New Zealand wool fabrics.

Aspect also met AgResearch's desire to support local producers and communities. All our products, including workstations and solid timber-constructed tables like Sector 2 and Atlas, were designed and manufactured in our Timaru warehouse.

What sets this project apart is its focus on environmentally sustainable design.

From the timber structure of the workplace wing to locally sourced materials, every aspect was designed to reduce the carbon footprint of the building. Passive design features, including projecting eaves and external sun shading, enhance energy efficiency, ensuring that the building aligns with AgResearch's commitment to sustainability.

The Architectus-designed facility, resembling large farm buildings, seamlessly blends modern functionality with a rural aesthetic. The colour scheme, inspired by traditional red farm corrugated iron, reflects the heartland essence that underlies AgResearch's key research focus areas.
