Mainfreight | Tauranga

A modern, collaborative approach.

Location: Tauranga | Size: 1,400m²

The Mainfreight Tauranga team recently moved into their new state-of-the art transport logistics facility on Truman Road. One of Mainfreight’s largest build projects to date, the new depot was designed by BSW Architects.

The land was leased to Mainfreight by the Mangatawa Incorporation, and legend has it that the area was once part of the harbour where a family of whales became stranded, and turned to stone after drinking from an enchanted spring. Today, they are known as Mangatawa, Hikurangi and Kopukairoa, which form the maunga in the area. To honour this history, the reception atrium has been designed to look like a whale’s tail in the harbour. A father, mother and baby whale, carved in timber by a local artist, adorn the central column.

Mainfreight’s workplace culture is to have an open-plan workspace for the entire team, with workpoint placement that allows open communication and collaborative working styles at all times. The furniture and interior design elements needed to represent the company colour scheme without over-using the Mainfreight blue.

Activate electric sit-to-stand desks with Reach monitor arms are utilised in working areas, with the positioning of Stork and Sector leaners and steel storage cabinets with planters defining the different areas without isolating the teams. Agility and Sector tables were customised for the boardroom, meeting rooms and cafeteria. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the office give the team a full view of operations, and vice versa.

The cafeteria features large format Sector tables that form a long communal lunch table and casual meeting space.

Aspect have worked with us on a number of projects, but this site has really shown their understanding of Mainfreight’s needs. Without trying to change our image or culture, Aspect has guided us towards modern products that still fit the brief while looking stunning and benefit our team.
